What is SFS?
My name is Eliza - I am a junior at Newark Academy and the proud founder of Spunky Seniors Dog Sanctuary, an official 501(c)(3) located in Northern NJ. I am currently in the process of scoping the interest of local residents for a Seniors-for-Seniors program (name to be workshopped!). The backstory behind our senior dog sanctuary stems from the pure joy and companionship senior dogs have provided me. While not typically the first reached for in shelters or considered for new family pets, senior dogs have their perks. Senior dogs are naturally more relaxed and calm in their temperaments, they are content with a nice nap, typically come potty trained, and have the most spunky, stubborn personalities. We currently have a couple dogs in our care who love nothing more than pets and sleeping and want to explore the process of starting a program for seniors to connect with senior dog visits.
Specifics
Roughly, the plan consists of myself and other SSDS members picking one day out of the week to start. We can bring one of our small, mellow dogs upon signing of a waiver and scheduling. Not only would we be excited to meet and connect our dogs with local elderly, members would facilitate the visits. Think of the program similar to a meals-on-wheels except with the “meals” being human and dog companionship. Great pets, laughs, and socialization time. Ideally I would love to work with local food organizations and restaurants to tie in a food component into the visits. Our mission is to spread the love of senior dogs to those filled with wisdom and love to give.
